Luke's expertise on this subject is legendary. Smart little cutters with lines like a racer, which could sail within two points of the wind, and ride out a gale without shipping a sea. Even in the building shed the boat exhibits a harmony of line which reveals the artist that used to be hidden in every true craftsman. A piece of living history built by a craftsman who has put passion as well as skill into building this boat. Nobody would have guessed that this was a brand new vessel. The feeling of history inherent in these vessels was present, even though every piece of timber had been green not long before. The beauty of building from scratch is that one can take a boat from any period in history and recreate it. If done with the right feeling, the recreation can be as authentic as any existing vessel. Eve has all the charm of a smartly kept ancient wooden boat, from the hull shape to her channels and chainplates, deadeyes and lanyards. Eve sails and looks like a 100-year-old traditional boat but is new timber, which is very comforting. She handles the wind and swell like a much bigger boat, lifting on the swell with the easy motion of the big pilot cutter, solid but not ponderous, heeling nicely with the scuppers in the water at times, but nothing dramatic. You feel that you are in good hands. The enjoyment of sailing Eve is enhanced by the reaction she gets from other people, she excites interest and goodwill where ever she goes. I get a great deal of pleasure from simply belonging to this boat. To lie among these timbers listening to the sea rushing past is to feel seafaring's lost heartbeat. He is harvesting a remarkable talent and putting it into crafting beautiful boats. No nonsense, traditional, solid, spacious, light, and very, very comfortable. She was superb, solid, powerful, responsive and you knew that from the shore she would be making the most impressive of sights, that heads would be turning. Being part of the process that brought Lizzie May into reality has been a rare and wonderful privilege. Her very real beauty doesn't lie just in her lines, strength and power, but in the warmth and praise she brings from all who see her. |
